Overview of the 1st Forum

The 1st International Forum on the Decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station was held in Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture, co-hosted by the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy and the Nuclear Damage Compensation and Decommissioning Facilitation Corporation (NDF), in order to announce the results of decommissioning and water contamination countermeasures at Fukushima Daiichi, and keep people from forgetting about the accident or spreading harmful rumors. A total of 641 people participated from 15 countries, including Japanese and international experts, local officials, and students. They held discussions about top-level research findings from both Japan and abroad about decommissioning, as well as about how to communicate with locals in the course of decommissioning. It became clear that not only the technical aspect, but also the social aspect in the form of communication with the community, will be important themes for Japan to gather wisdom from around the world and overcome as part of measures to decommission 1F.
