Graphic Recording
Graphic recording is a method of recording contents such as discussions, seminars, interviews in real time using graphics (pictures) and texts to save the entire content as minutes. The advantage of “visualizing” discussions is that they can be understood intuitively and there is less chance of misunderstanding between participants and officials.
At the International Forum of the Decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi NPS, we have been using graphic recording since the 2nd forum held in 2017 to record the discussions on Day 1 between local communities and people involved in decommissioning.

Pre-events
Co-creation workshop “Dialogue on decommissioning” (Hearing Activity)
As a pre-event for the forum, we held “Dialogue on Decommissioning”, a co-creation workshop to ask opinions and questions about 1F decommissioning, at various locations. 2023, we held 7 workshops for adults in Fukushima Prefecture, with 50 participants.
The feedback we received was compiled into the booklet “Voice from Fukushima” and distributed to the participants of the forums DAY 1.
Student Session
“Thinking with Students – Futaba Future Workshop
This is a two-day program in which high school and technical college students in Fukushima Prefecture learn about the past and present of the Futaba region and think about what kind of policies should be implemented to bring them closer to the future of the region they want to realize.
Prior to the event, they learned basic information about decommissioning and an overview of the program via online. On the first day, 5 August 2023, the students learned about the current situation and issues in the region through a tour of facilities in the Futaba area and dialogue with local people. On the second day, 6 August 2023, they thought about the future they want to realize and what they should do to realize it, based on past and present statistical data such as the population and industry of the region. In the group work, the participants shared what they actually saw, heard, and felt, and worked together to tackle the assignment under the facilitation of university students.
International Mentoring Workshop
“Joshikai” in Fukushima 2023
Beginning in 2019, NDF will collaborate with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development/Nuclear Energy Agency (OECD/NEA) in an effort to increase interest in science and engineering, including decommissioning, through interaction with female researchers and engineers, called mentors, for female junior high and high school students in Fukushima Prefecture and other parts of Japan, through the “International The mentoring workshop “Joshikai in Fukushima” is held in cooperation with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development/Nuclear Energy Agency (OECD/NEA) as an effort to increase women’s participation in science and engineering fields through exchange with female researchers and engineers.
This year, the fifth such event was held at the Tomioka Cultural Exchange Center “Forest of Learning” on July 29-30, with female high school and technical college students from Fukushima Prefecture and beyond, as well as co-chairs and mentors from Japan and overseas.
