The 6th International Forum

Summary of The 6th International Forum

https://1fd6.ndf-forum.com/en

In order to make steady progress with the decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, it is crucial that we strive to announce accurate and transparent information in a timely and appropriate manner both in Japan and abroad, and maintain careful communication with local residents, achieving mutual understanding through continued dialogue. We will also hold the 6th Fukushima Daiichi Decommissioning International Forum in 2022, as we have in previous years, in order for Japanese and international experts to share the latest progress and technical results of the decommissioning process.

Graphic Recording

Graphic recording is a method of recording contents such as discussions, seminars, interviews in real time using graphics (pictures) and texts to save the entire content as minutes. The advantage of “visualizing” discussions is that they can be understood intuitively and there is less chance of misunderstanding between participants and officials.

At the International Forum of the Decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi NPS, we have been using graphic recording since the 2nd forum held in 2017 to record the discussions on Day 1 between local communities and people involved in decommissioning.

Pre-events

Co-creation workshop “Dialogue on decommissioning” (Hearing Activity)

As a pre-event for the forum, we held “Dialogue on Decommissioning”, a co-creation workshop to ask opinions and questions about 1F decommissioning in small groups, at various locations. 2022, we held 7 workshops for adults in Fukushima Prefecture, with 41 participants.
The feedback we received was compiled into the booklet “Voice from Fukushima” and distributed to the participants of the forums.

Student Session – Future Leaders Workshop

Participants
23 Students from high school and technical college in Fukushima pref.

NDF has been holding the “Student Session”, in conjunction with the forum, as a workshop for current local high school and technical college students to think about what they should do now to bring about a desirable future for the Futaba area, assuming that they are the future leaders of the Futaba area.

As the “Student Session” , the participants visited the local sites, the Great East Japan Earthquake and Nuclear Disaster Legacy Museum and its surroundings (including fieldwork) and incubation facilities in Okuma Town for the first time by bus on August 6, 2022. The participants experienced firsthand what was happening in the area and used what they felt there in the “Future Leaders Workshop” held on the second day.

In the “Future Leaders Workshop” , the participants discussed what should be done now based on the difference between “the future of Futaba area if nothing is done” and “the future as envisioned by the participants, based on the statistical data of the area and information on decommissioning. Participants were also asked to think about what they should do now.

The “Future Leaders Workshop” was held under the supervision of the Open Project on Supporting-tools for Municipalities towards De-carbonized Societies (OPoSSuM, a Chiba University research group), a non-profit organization.

International Mentoring Workshop “Joshikai” in Fukushima 2022

Since 2019 NDF has collaborated with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development/Nuclear Energy Agency (OECD/NEA) in an effort to increase interest in science and engineering, including decommissioning, through interaction with female researchers and engineers, called mentors, for female junior high and high school students in Fukushima Prefecture and other parts of Japan, through the “International mentoring workshop “Joshikai in Fukushima”.

This year’s workshop, the fourth in the series, was held face-to-face for the first time in three years, with 36 female high school and college of technology students from Fukushima Prefecture and beyond, and nine co-chairs and mentors from Japan and overseas gathering at the Narahaa Remote Technology Development Center of the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (Narahaa Town, Fukushima Prefecture) over two days from July 23 to 24.

In the workshop, in addition to the keynote speech by the co-chairs and lectures by the mentors, a special lecturer gave a lecture on 1F decommissioning and Fukushima reconstruction, and the participants were divided into 8 groups to exchange opinions on their own career development, 1F decommissioning and Fukushima. They also had a tour of the facilities in the Naraha Remote Engineering Development Center, where they had lectures from engineers and a QA session. On the following day, July 25, the participants who wished to visit the 1F site toured the facility.
