The 5th International Forum
Summary of The 5th International Forum
https://1fd5.ndf-forum.com/In order to make steady progress with the decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, it is crucial that we strive to announce accurate and transparent information in a timely and appropriate manner both in Japan and abroad, and maintain careful communication with local residents, achieving mutual understanding through continued dialogue. We will also hold the 5th Fukushima Daiichi Decommissioning International Forum in 2021, as we have in previous years, in order for Japanese and international experts to share the latest progress and technical results of the decommissioning process.

Graphic Recording
Graphic recording is a method of recording contents such as discussions, seminars, interviews in real time using graphics (pictures) and texts to save the entire content as minutes. The advantage of “visualizing” discussions is that they can be understood intuitively and there is less chance of misunderstanding between participants and officials.
At the International Forum of the Decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi NPS, we have been using graphic recording since the 2nd forum held in 2017 to record the discussions on Day 1 between local communities and people involved in decommissioning.

Pre-Events
Hairo-no-Iroha Visiting Workshop (Hearing Activity)
As a pre-event to the Forum, we have been holding the “Hairo-no-Iroha Visiting Workshop” at various locations to collect opinions and questions from a small number of people regarding the decommissioning of 1F (Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station). The opinions received are being compiled into a booklet “Voice from Fukushima” and distributed to the forum participants.
In 2021, we held the Workshop at 11 high schools in Fukushima pref. and convened the “Hairo-no-Iroha Roundtable” for adults 4 times, with a total of 182 participants.
Student Session – Future Leaders Workshop
NDF has been holding a “Student Session,” in conjunction with the forum, for current local high school and college students to think about what they should be doing now to bring about the desired future of the Futaba region, assuming that they will be the future leaders of the region.
This year’s session was held online on October 17th, 2021, with the participation of 15 local high school and college students, using the “Future Leaders Workshop” method under the supervision of the Open Project on Supporting-tools for Municipalities towards De-carbonized Societies (Chiba University research group, OPoSuM-DS).
In the “Future Leaders Workshop”, based on regional statistical data and information on decommissioning of the nuclear power station, participants were asked to think about what they should be doing now, taking as a guide the difference between “expected future outcomes if no action is taken” and “the future envisioned by the participants”.
International Mentoring Workshop “Joshikai” in Fukushima 2021
NDF organizes the International Mentoring Workshop “Joshikai in Fukushima” for junior-high and high school female students from Fukushima and other areas of Japan to promote their interests in science and engineering, including decommissioning, through discussion with female researchers and engineers called mentors, in collaboration with the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development / Nuclear Energy Agency (OECD/NEA).
This year’s workshop was held online for three days, from October 12 to 14, 2021, with the participation of 8 mentors from Japan and abroad, and 21 high school students, including from Romania.
During the workshop, mentors gave lectures and special lecturers instructed on 1F decommissioning and Fukushima reconstruction. Participants were then divided into 6 groups and exchanged opinions about their career development, 1F decommissioning and Fukushima as well.
